Attention Deficit Disorders

When you’re torn between laughter, and wanting to pull your hair out…

I ran up the basement stairs carrying my large coffee pot with the electrical cord perfectly spliced off screaming, “MATT!!!”

There was only one person in my home with the skill and desire to splice a wire that well: my fifteen-year-old son, Matt.

When I questioned why he would have cut my coffee pot wire, he looked at me innocently and said, “I needed it for a project I was working on. You weren’t using the coffee pot, so I took it.”

I informed my son that I had over 30 people coming for dinner in a couple of hours. I knew some of them would want coffee! He said, “No problem, mom. I can fix it.” And, he did.

Twelve years later, that coffee maker still works!

Do you have a Matt in your family?

Does your child:

  • Act impulsively without thinking?
  • Get easily distracted?
  • Perform inconsistently or erratically in school?
  • Often lose his things?
  • Leave a trail of items around your house?
  • Start projects then lose steam, leaving them only partly completed?
  • Overreact emotionally to situations?

He or she may have an Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

What can you do?

Your child’s been diagnosed with an Attention Deficit Disorder, but you weren’t given a manual on how to raise her.

She’s a kind and funny child, but are there are times when you’re ready to tear your hair out in frustration over her behavior or lack of motivation?

Perhaps you fear for her life, because there are times you want to beat her?!

I’m here to help.

When you come for therapy with your child, we’ll have an initial session to develop goals and get to know each other. You’ll learn which behaviors are the result of your child’s ADHD and which behaviors are potentially changeable.

Together, we’ll develop practical strategies to address your child’s challenges.

I try to be creative and individualize treatment to your family’s needs. Often, I’ll help you learn to have fun and learn to laugh about your child’s symptoms.

As a mother of a son with ADHD, I’ve been there and can help you both, without losing your sanity.
